GUNDOG TRAINING
Starting June 2023 Gundog Training will be available for all dogs.
Rob Martin has been training for the public since 2000, he started originally in Bullard, TX but moved the kennel to our new training grounds at Lost Prairie Ranch in Wills Point, TX in 2016. Rob is retired and his son, Joshua Martin has taken over the training operation at the kennel. Rob has been teaching Joshua his techniques since he was a child. Joshua has a keen eye for reading dogs and adapts to each dog to get them trained. LPR is an ideal 100 acre training facility that features 2 different fields with ponds in each. The cover is native grasses which allows training year round without having to worry about cover for the birds.
We believe that dogs can be trained properly without resorting to whipping, beating, or other unpleasant experiences. For the last two decades we have been primarily using the West method, which is a silent method that uses birds simultaneously with a pinch collar to teach the dogs whoa, rather than shocking them from the beginning when the dog doesn't understand what is being asked, like some methods. The West method is a low pressure environment for the dog that all dispositions can handle. It's our experience that if the birds are what teaches the dog whoa, the transition for the dog to learn to be steady to wing, shot, and fall is easier than other methods. In our training program we utilize the wonder lead, pinch collar and check cord, an electric collar, and automatic bird launchers with pigeons and quail. Repetition and patience will generally get the results that all of us want in a bird dog. One thing that we have come to realize is that every dog is an individual and one training program does not fit every individual dog. We try to keep current on different training methods and aids that are available, and when we find one that works for us we are not opposed to using it. Most well bred bird dogs can be trained to point, back, and (if natural retrievers) retrieve in 90 days.
Our puppy program consists of introducing puppies to both quail and pigeons, taking them for runs in the field with ponds available, putting them on tie outs, introducing the gun, and running with other puppies and dogs to get them exposed to being a bird dog.
If you are interested in getting your dog trained to retrieve or are just wanting obedience work done with your dog. Check out the Retrieving & Obedience page. Joshua Martin has been training dogs to retrieve for several years, and adapts to each dog rather than trying to have every dog conform to one method. The Retrieving & Obedience Training is open to all dog breeds.
